Jun 12, 2009, Port varieties to save us from high alcohol reds

Dry red from Souzao, Tinta cao, tinta roriz and Touriga, and just 13% alcohol.

One of the most boring things in Aussie red wines is the level of alcohol, regulalrly above 14%. the standard excuse is that high temperatures in Australia mean more sugar, hence more alcohol. This may be true of Shiraz but you an make good red wine in hot areas with less alcohol.

Paradoxically you do this with can do this with Port varieties. Stanton and Killeen from ruthrglen, not a cool region, have released a wine made fromport varieites at just 13%. See this article by Jeni Port.

Any other wineries doing this? Let me know via this page
