Perricoota Wine RegionThe Perricoota Wine Region is a compact region around the township of Moama on the northern bank of the Murray River. It is in the Big Rivers Zone of New South Wales, along with the Riverina Zone. But Perricoota has more in common with the Goulburn Valley, just across the border in Victoria than with the Riverina.
The vineyards in the Perricoota region all rely on irrigation. The continuing drought and restricted availability of water is a limiting factor in the region. Another significant problem is frost. The wine industry in this region is comparatively recent. The first significant plantings of wine grapes were made in the 1990s. Some of the wineries in the region have been established by growers who sell grapes to larger producers elsewhere. A major asset for the wine industry is the popularity of Echuca-Moama as a tourist destination. These twin river towns are famous as destinations for riverboats, historic paddlesteamers and a well preserved inland port. Some wineries have established restaurant, conference and function centres along with their cellar doors. The region produces red and white table wines as well as a few fortifieds. The climate is quite warm and suitable for a range of varieties, including later maturing reds. Verdelho is a suitable variety for the production of white wines in regions such as this.
