An Alternative Wine Event in Melbourne

A few years ago I was among a small group of wine enthusiasts who met to try some alternative varietal wines. We haven't met for a while but my friend Owen Smythe has organised tasting event for the end of this month.

Guest will be Eric Semmler of 919 wines. Last year Eric was named Australian Winemaker of the Year by Winestate Magazine. 919 Wines is in the Riverland Region of South Australia. They are part of a group of winemakers who are transforming that region from its former role as high volume producer of cask wines to makers of wines for serious winelovers.

We will have a few rather special wines to share. If you are in the Wine Century Club, or an aspiring member then I can almost guarantee that you will add to your tally.

The event will be held on the evening of Tuesday 29 April. We will me meeting at an Italian restaurant in Richmond where we have negotiated a economical package for a meal and corkage. Numbers are strictly limited. Please email me ASAP if you are interested in attending.

I am working on a number of projects at the moment, the most important is my Vinodiversity Magazine. It is available for your iPad or iPhone.

The most recent issue has stories about Sagrantino and Vermentino, the King Valley Wine Region, the wines of Idaho as part of a new series about diverse wines in America and some advice about how to store opened bottles of wine. The "Have you ever tried" variety is Mencia, from North Western Spain. There is even a poem about it. Do you know of any poems about wine grape varieties?

The next issue will be special on Portugal, its wines and grape varieties including stories about Portuguese varieties in Australia.

If you haven't already subscribed you can get a free 12 month subscription via www.vinodiversity.com/nezod.html.

Our Partner Online Wine Merchant

Over the years I have recommended several wine merchant partners. Last year I signed up with Different Drop. These guys really are different. They have a range of wines from smaller producers, lesser known regions and also they concentrate alternative varieties. They have very reasonable freight charges, even free for larger orders. They have made up some interesting six packs of alternative reds and alternative whites so you can try some of the best new wines in Australia. have a browse to see what you think.
