Australian Wine from
Zinfandel Grape Variety

Zinfandel and Food

What is your favourite food to accompany Zinfandel?

Zinfandel is most famous as a popular Californian red grape variety. In fact about 10% of the vineyards in that state are planted to Zinfandel.

It is also grown in Southern Italy under the name Primitivo and in Croatia as Crljenak Kaštelanski.

There is steadily growing interest in the variety in Australia, where about 70 wineries are now using the variety.

The wines from this variety vary from big powerful reds (up to 15% alcohol) to pale rose styles 'White Zin'.

You could say that Zin is a knockabout variety. It has its enthusiasts and its sceptics - the word elegant does not appear in too many Zinfandel wine reviews.

But what is the best food to have with these wines?

The classic answer is barbecues and pizzas, reflecting the idea that the wine is best for casual occasions rather than formal dining.
