Tempranillo now top alternative red

The 2009 Alternative Varieties Wine Show held in Mildura during the first week of November marked a milestone in the history of Tempranillo. There were a total of 65 wines made from this variety (including 12 Tempranillo dominated blends). This compares to just 51 Sangiovese wines of which

The Tempranillo wines were judged of high quality, five were awarded gold medals, five received silver medals and 17 reached bronze medal standing. Thus just over 40% of the wines shown were of medal standard.

Another milestone for the variety is that recently the Vinodiversity database that underpins the Vinodiversity.com website now includes 200 wineries using this promising Spanish wine variety
