Australian Wine from
Alternative Grape Varieties

St MaCaire Wine

by Wal Frank

Today I opened a 1982 LoxtonMedia Estate Saint Macaire wine, fully expecting to have to pour it down the sink but I was pleasantly surprised when I tasted it . Which, if any, wineries in Australia produce wines from this rare variety ?

St MaCaire Wine in Australia

I agree that west end is the only Australian winery producing this grape - but they put it under their Calabria label - current vintage has just been released - 2007 I believe - contact the wine society as they recently had it for under $15 per bottle

St Macaire in Australia

The only Australian winery I know who is using St Macaire is Westend Estate in Griffith. Their wine is pricey for a Riverina wine but when you taste it you'll probably agree that it is worth the price.

I'm not sue it will last 25+ years as yours did but is certainly a wine that could be worth holding on to.

I'm currently touring in SW France and yesterday I visited a conservatory of wine grape varieties. They had a few vines of St Macaire and it was listed as a "Cepage Ancien Noir" which would indicate that it is not used to any great extent in SW France.
