The Geographic Indications System uses Regions to cover the majority of vineyards. A larger unit is the Zone, which my contain one or more regions. Some Zones contain so few vineyards that they have no formal regions in them. This was the case in the Northern Slopes Zone until fairly recently.
In 2008 an area in the middle of the Zone, from Tenterfield in the north to Tamworth in the south, was declared as the New England Wine Region. A few wineries in the Zone lie outside the boundaries of new region and are still listed in the Zone.
