The Humble Tumbler Adventures in Food and Wine provides wine appreciation courses in Fitzroy, an inner suburb of Melbourne, Australia.

The course is conducted by Clare Burder, the founder and director of The Humble Tumbler, and also a little wine label called Eminence Wines in Victoria's High Country.

It’s a four week (1 x 2 hour class per week) introductory wine appreciation course, which will be running monthly in Melbourne starting in July. I’ve written the course from scratch and the result is a 130 page mini ‘textbook’ which is informative without being too serious, a little bit quirky and sometimes moderately humorous (emphasis being on the ‘sometimes’!). This is not your average wine course - there’s no room for pomposity, just interesting, fun, relevant content delivered in a straightforward & practical manner; it’s learning by tasting and talking, rather than studying.

The course covers the main grape varieties and styles in Australia, a little on winemaking and plenty on food and wine pairing. Participants will learn how to taste and evaluate wine, how to describe wine and how to choose the right bottle for the right occasion. And, of course - there is plenty of opportunity to meet new people, discuss the wines and (perhaps) get in a scuffle over that last slice of prosciutto!

The first course starts in July and I’m really excited to say that it’s being held at Backstreet Eating in Fitzroy. This is a new venue from the guys from Birdman Eating (Gertrude Street) and features an underground ‘food cave’ where the course will be hosted. Expect house made charcuterie, local cheese and other delicious edibles. There are 30 wines tasted over the course, all Australian – and chosen specifically to exemplify a particular style. And believe me, they are all delicious.

TheSeptember Course @ Backstreet Eating starts on the 4th! from 6pm until 8pm at Backstreet Eating. You can book a place securely online here or feel free to email me: clare {{AT}} if you prefer not to book online.

Humble Tumbler Courses will be held monthly. See the website for details.
