In The Age Epicure on Tuesday 10 May wine writer Jeni Port nominates "10 reasons to like about the 2010 Vintage"
She goes on to review 10 wines of the 2010 vintage and it is interesting to note the varieties. Four rieslings, a chardonnay, and a fiano for the whites and a pinot noir, a touriga nacional, a blend of touriga, tinta amarela and tinta cao, and a garnacia (grenache) tempranillo blend. Not exactly mainstream, but of course the 2010 reds made in the more traditional style are not yet relaeased.
The point Jeni was making was that 2010 is a great year, but the subtext is that some beautiful wines are now being made with alternative varieties. She has nominated the Scott Adelaide Hills Fiano, but I'm sure that there are plenty of other Fiano's that are excelent as well. There are some brilliant Arneis wine around as well.
The weather during 2010 vintage was excellent in many Australian wine regions. Plantings of alternative varieties are reaching maturity and some great wines were produced.
What are your favourites from this vintage made from alternative varieties?
