What was my best wine of the year.

Maybe the Brown Brothers 2007 Vermentino? It won a gold medal at AAVWS.

Perhaps the most surprising wine I tried was John Vale's cool climate Durif 2006 made from vines grown at his vineyard at Balnarring on the Mornington Peninsula

Best bargain wine was a Riddle Sangiovese Shiraz blend which cost me about $3.50 at a wine auction.

Some other highlights of my year included the continuing Fed Square Showcase Series, the Rutherglen Wine Show, The Inland Wine Show at Swan Hill, the London International Wine Show, Winexpo at Ribiera del Duero, buying wine from a 'petrol bowser' in Madiran in south western France, and again at Preston Market.

Vinodiversity's crystal ball sees 2008 bringing us:

Higher wine prices as the drought really takes hold on production
Consolidation of major emerging varietals, Sangiovese, Tempranillo, Pinot gris and Viognier
Expect to see more innovative wines, Southern Italians, Vermentino, Fiano, Aglianico.
Arneis to continue its rise, followed by the already trendy Albarino.
Will the Tannat health kick have any effect?
