Gold Medal Wines at the
Australian Alternative Varieties Wine Show 2007

The annual AAVWS was held in Mildura from 7 10 November. The list of entries keeps growing and 599 wines were shown, about 20% more than last year. There was discussion about how the growth could be kept in control. Perhaps some varieties which were alternative five or so years ago are now mainstream and could be dropped in the future.

It was interesting to note the spread of wineries who found themselves in the gold. Some were established brands (Brown Brothers, Tahbilk, Yalumba), others were relative newcomers and smaller operations.

Also encouraging was the emergence of a few varieties that have yet to make an impression on the radar for the general wine drinking public; in this group are Vermentino, Kerner, Rondinella, Corvina, Lagrein and Montepulciano.

The Awards were announced at the Long Lunch held on the Paddleboat "Avoca" on the Murray River in Mildura. The lunch featured gold medal winners from the 2006 show.
